I spent some time recently in Granville, which is a rocky penininsula that justs out into the English Channel opposite Jersey, just at the top of the Baie du Mont St Michel. The town itself was heavily fortified during successive wars with the English, from about the 15th cenury onwards and there was a fairly bloody battle there during the French revolution. As a consequence of course, the occupying German army could not resist adding its own defences during WW II. These have been left, pretty much intact but mostly sealed, up at the end of the old town (the Haute Ville). They feature a number of German style pillboxes with embrasures for some big guns, a couple of hefty HAA gun emplacements and an accommodation block, which according to a local source "les chavs locale" (I kid you not - that was the phrase that the guy actually used, though he was bi-lingual and hence may have been pulling my leg) have knocked a couple of holes in that are big enough to get a camera through. These were obviously all part of the Atlantikwall and a testament to the fact that the Germans could pour concrete as well as anyone!
