Cheers for pointing that out,

I'd been wondering why I'd had 467 Unique visitors to my Hellingly pages from that Article in a single day! The page on the railway must have had a huge amount of traffic!

Just had a look at the link and am loving those cute little electric locos. Never seen anything like that before.!

Very interesting thread

I have found this a very interesting thread indeed..many thanx to one and all for the links, and the Wiki article is a particularly good read..shame about the old railcar being burnt out by yobbos.

Stu

With regards to the loco, i did hear a "rumour" several years ago from a friend that works on the Bluebell Railway, before i got back into dereliction, that someone has the loco from Hellingly and was slowly restoring it, due to its status. These guys will salvage absolutely anything they can and not within reason! if its historic, they will do it even if the die trying, they are just so committed to the cause!

I will make a point of going for a pint or three to see what i can find out?

did you add the photos to my hellingly hospital article? nice one, ive wondered how to do that :)

Excellent find that.

The article suggests that the locomotive was of German origin, and I would agree, most likely produced by Siemens Schukurt in Berlin. It is a design known as 'Steeple cab' and they have been quite common in the UK on private lines in the past, to name but a few:

1. Harton Electric Railway (South Shields) - 15 locos (of various ages) and the largest user up until 1989!
2. Kearsley Power Station (Near Bolton) - 2 locos
3. Heysham Power Station - 2 or 3 locos
4. York Foss Island power Station 1 loco
5. Courtaulds at Spondon - 2 locos
6. Failfields shipyards, Govan - 1 loco
7. Newcastle quayside branch - 2 locos (up a 1 in 20 gradient tunnel which still exists!!)

And many more, all sadly long gone. The Hellingly one is a little gem!

The locos from 7 were made by Brush Traction, & 1 survivor is in the NRM. I've got a photo of it but no scanner.
