HDR is like marmite, you either love it or hate it. Personally I love those HDR shots, gives the place a whole new atmosphere. Nicely done

whats HDR?

HDR is an imaging technique where multiple exposures are blended together to create an image that has a greater dynamic range than a single exposure. Done well and you'd hardly notice it. But sadly it's often used by talentless individuals in an attempt to pass bland photos off as something other than the same repetitive ****. It is painful to look at and it makes my eyes bleed. I have lost count of the amount of bad examples there are posed on this forum.

I am glad you enjoyed your first trip to Hellingly. I always find it very peaceful and everywhere you turn, theres a photograph to take. Try not to be too put off by the criticism regarding your HDR shots but I would also agree that the original shots would be more appealing to see as it represents what was actually there.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm not put off at all by the criticism. I'm sure if I looked at Reapermans photos I'd feel the same thing.
So here is an original shot and the HDR of the same view. I know which one to me evokes more feeling and empathy for the poor inhabitants. But I'm sure some would disagree. That's life.

i think i get what you mean but its gone over my head. ill just stick to my no-tripod canon power shot pics. with perhaps a tweek here and there.

i thought that one of the pics has=d been turned into 'oil painting' using the same photo editor thing i have. dont ask what its called, its all to do with the pc which is my hubbys job. i know how to turn it on and off.

still, i wouldnt mind a olay on this HDR. where can i find it?

Google, High Dynamic Range, there a thousands of pages on the web about it. Not sure if the powershot has an automatic bracketed shot option?? I know the Canon DSLR do, but basically in very lay mans terms:

You take a minimum of three shots of the same scene, one exposed corectly, one underexposed and one over exposed, these are then blended and adjusted with software and in some cases tone mapped to produce the above results. The idea is to have a correctly exposed shot across the dynamic range. i.e show details in the shadows whilst also retaining highlights. Done correctly it works but it can be overcooked and end up looking nothing like the oiginal.

Isn't the main point of HDR to bring out detail across the dynamic range, i.e show details in the shadows whilst retaing detail in the highlights??

I see less of both in the above HDR's...........I have read all over the net that a correctly HDR'd photo should virtually be unable to be called that.
