HH Fever Hospital 06.03.2016
Revisit to recce due to not been prepared so 3hrs kip on the road at 5am. Frost on the ground crunching under our feet as me and Jim headed to location, nothing like a little climb to start warming you up but when you got a 2nd floor entry to look forward too you know you'll warm up soon. So once inside we headed to a view point as we were waiting on the 6ft5in Clown Hank, not long after he was in and we set about capturing decay shadows light fixtures and everything else. The best thing about getting up early is you capture golden light.
History
Homelands Hospital opened in 1903 and was originally a fever hospital, an early form of infectious disease hospital. This explains the somewhat isolated position of the complex. It was believed at the time that the best way to treat diseases such as tuberculosis, typhus and smallpox was to move sufferers away from others to a more rural site where fresh air would be the best form of therapy.
The building have had some later additions and alterations, however, the style and quality of the buildings are typical of that used for municipal buildings of the era.
The majority of period features within the buildings have either been lost or covered by modern surface finishes, though some period features remain.
The hospital closed in December 2004. In August 2016 demolition began on Homelands to make way for new houses.
