Visited this colliery on route to Scotland.i had two friends come and join me and we hit three sites this being the last of the day.it was a last minute decision as we were going to go church Fenton and then decided on this one instead for something different.i am glad I did now.it was a bit of a trek to it.walking through sludge and puddles to get too it.we were aware that there was a security man with dogs driving around in his van.the first bit we hit was the main building.with all the machinery and conveyor belts in it.it was dark, dingy, dusty and I loved it.we got right up top were the silos were and they were massive going right down to the ground and the view was stunning.glad the grills were strong.this was my first ever colliery.i have split this report into two parts I will do the offices, shaft entrance etc in a seperate report as it was far too big a site to cover in one report.kellingly colliery was the last deep mine in England and it opened in the 1965 and closed in December 1915.the mine had 2000 thousand workers when first opened.atvits closure it had 450.the site was known as big k and could bring 950 tonnes per hour up to the surface.and was the largest deep mine in Europe seventeen miners were killed here over its course.and a memorial is in a museum now.the site is due to be flattened very soon.work has already begun.and hundreds of houses builtthere.the shafts have already been capped and sealed.
