would be criminal if they did, i am a self confessed " archive anorak" my self :)

As my name suggests, this is something of a pet subject of mine.
It's unlikely that we'll 'lose' county archives per se, as their maintenance is a legal requirement, but cuts are nonetheless a serious threat. Downgrading of services, amalgamations, reductions in opening hours, staffing cuts and so-on all risk jeopardising archive services and public access to them. That said, the picture isn't universal as some archives I'm aware of are actually upgrading or relocating to better premises.

What's less certain is the future of independent, museum and community archives which may depend on government grants and those government bodies with their own archives which face significant cuts or even abolition.

Definitely something to keep an eye on in future...

Letters to our locally elected representatives needed methinks.
I've already sent a good twenty or so emails to mine on all manner of subjects since he's been in office, but I've never yet once had an answer...oh, apart from twice when he just reiterated the outcome as printed in the newspapers...so I don't think he'll be bothered somehow, as long as he keeps on getting his outrageously inflated wages for doing nothing!
This makes me so angry. Don't get me started!
