[Urban Shadow]

Hi guys,

I could not find much history about this place other than it was closed in 2004 and remains that way to the present date. It is a very old look building and judging from the Chapel it was very devout Catholic place. I visited here with Cuban B.

Lovely pictures. The symbol in photo 6 certainly looks masonic which would be a very odd find in a Roman Catholic chapel; the rest of the iconography does look decidedly RC.

Just to help clarify...the symbols are all early Christian ones, mainly made up of the Greek alphabet. The P with a cross is the Chi Rho which represents Christ and the flanking letters are the Alpha & Omega which signifies the first and the last...again representing Christ. I'm not sure about the others. The double M does look masonic but isn't...the similar masonic symbol is the Square & Compass. Hope that helps. I love symbols so I'll keep digging for the others.
The dude is actually Christ, btw. So too is the other one...they're taken from early Christian coptic icons.
Very nice find, btw.

A bit of explanation on the altar symbols:

Picture 4: This is the Altar of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a popular RC devotion (although perhaps less popular now). The monogrammatic symbol on the altar is S with H superimposed - Sacred Heart.

Picture 6: Not a Masonic symbol. This would have been the Lady Chapel, devoted to Mary, Mother of God (there would have been a statue of her behind the alter, but it has gone walkies). The monogram is A M - Ave Maria - Hail Mary, from the Angelic Greeting in Luke's Gospel.

Picture 8: This is the Altar of St Joseph, another very popular RC devotion (particularly in Scotland, I think). The symbol on the altar is "St J" - Saint Joseph.

Picture 9: The Greek symbols: Alpha - Chi - Rho - Omega. The Chi and Rho symbols are superimposed in the centre, and are a common monogram for Christ, from the first two letters of the Greek for "Christ". The Alpha and Omega, on either side, stand for "The Beginning and the End", so the symbol can be read: "Christ, the Beginning and the End".

Thanks very much for the comments guys, and thanks for the information on the symbols and pictures. I was dieing to know what they stood for when I was there. There was another symbol which had 2 three leafed clovers on them, I think Cuban may have a pic of them, if not I will show you my crap blurred version. Though as pincheck says, he was probably in a dark room somewhere, moving wheelchairs, lol.

This place has been severely pikied since I was last here. Rooms have been trashed to find metal, radiators stolen, and floors I walked along have now collapsed.

Hi guys,

Very interesting post and site overall. Regarding the symbols and images above, the symbol in pic 4 is "IHS", a popular Christogram seen in Catholic churches etc. It comes from the first three letters of Jesus Christ in Greek.

In the second last pic, I don't think this is Our Lady. It is St. Therese of Lisieux (note the brown habit, the habit of the Carmelites and the roses she is carrying, she is also known as The Little Flower). Since an icon of St. Therese is in this church, it is likey that there could have been some Carmelite connection here.

I agree that pic 8 is a side altar to St. Joseph. The "J" is shaped like that because the symbol of St. Joseph is a tool (he was a carpenter) and the J is shaped like that to represent tools.
