On a recent Trip to the potteries Dave and Myself decided we'd stop in to try the local traditional dish: Staffordshire Oatcakes. These Oat-Pancakes are a traditional food among the workers of stoke for over 200 years. I remembered reading an article about the proposed compulsory purchase of the last vendor of these traditional Oatcakes served through a hole in the wall hatch.

The whole area is being compulsory purchased and systematically leveled: Houses, Factorys, shops and pubs are being rased to the ground all around that area. A whole way of life is being wiped out. After buying our oatcakes (With Bacon and Cheese) We took a walk around the area to look at what was left.

The Hole in the wall oatcakes shop is still in business and is resiting the council and developers. I hope they succeed as it would be a real shame to loose something so unique. They're also really tasty! The rest of the area is faring less well with many buildings already gone.

Anyway on with the photos:

I remember when we were at the meet up there in '07, whole streets had already been demolished with huge piles of bricks at each end. It's a crying bloody shame. :(
Thanks for posting these, Reaps. Great to see it before the rest goes.
The oatcakes are great, aren't they!

Why oh why we have to knock down Terrace houses like that I will never know. There should be a law against it:mad:

Terraced houses are great...much nicer than the new-builds today, imo. I've previously lived in a couple, one of which was in Hanley when I worked there for three months...way, way backalong. So it's extra sad for me to see them go...mine's probably gone now! :(

Excellent pics RM, such a shame to see the whole place being demolished. I'd much rather terrace houses than the rubbish they build nowadays. Plus you can't hear conversations through the paper thin walls in those.

Will have to try some oatcakes when we're next down that way.

Cheers,

:) Sal
