The town of Henson is/was a company town, meaning that the mine owned the settlement, and the miners often had a pretty rough time. This particular settlement was the scene of an armed strike at the turn of the last century. The strike eventually ended without a shot being fired. The Ute Ulay mine has been worked on and off until very recently, and parts seem to be live still.
Access is easy by 4x4, but wheres the fun it that? Its much more fun on two wheels!
Before reaching Henson, this was spotted at the side of the dirt road...

Many portals in the area are sealed in this way. This is the view inside:

First view of the main structures and the tailings (yellow):

The trestles on this structure extend down to the bottom of the ravine.

Just ahead is a large breached dam

The creek suffers from acid mine drainage and heavy metal contamination during period of high runoff from nearby tailings and open adits.

more to come...

The roof of this building has partially collapsed due to last winter's snow loads. Note the support at the left (on the cliff edge) and the dam in the background.

What's this?

At the portal I noticed a very strange smell. It could have been the altitude but I immediately felt very light headed, so this is as far as I got:

Normally I don't retouch the photos, but I changed the contrast on the mine shot to improve visibility - looks like a dead end.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pics. I picked some of the better shots, but I might have one or two more.
