The Colorado Rockies are home to many precious metal mining sites, and several mountain towns sprang up as a direct result of mining activities. Some towns died as production dropped, while others survive as tourist towns.
For years, this place had a "shotgun enforced" no trespassing sign, but I was finally able to get a permission visit last spring. The site has been worked since the late 1800's (Colorado only became a state in 1876). It includes accommodation for miners and extraction/processing facilities.
A rickety old headframe.
Water storage for domestic use.
Early cabins.
Some buildings have withstood harsh winters better than others.
Evidence of the last occupants.
The main adit.
Looks like asbestos rope.
Assaying office and blacksmith's shop.
Obligatory chair shot.
All that remains of a water flume.
The mill building
A little something for fans of old advertising.
This thing was huge!
Given its age, much of the building was in great condition...
...including the electrical parts!
The belly of the beast.
Fresh air again!
A very ornate cast-iron radiator.
Possibly the assaying office.
A last look at the site.
