Took these pics last month.

The first uknown item is in a field, just off a local road, a friend told me about it. Had a good hunt around, no signs of any clues.

I could have just trotted up to the farm house and asked what the hell it is, but that spoils the fun!

First thought's were some kind of mine vent, with it having an 'open roof', but then why would it have a door, albeit a sealed shut one. That would surely be far too dangerous. Nothing shows on any maps.

Other item is a locked door to an underground area of some kind.
It's next to a newer enclosed area used by the water board. Perhaps and older undergound storage area?
Will venture out there soon to get some pics of it, it's not far away.

Any incklings would be greatly appreciated.

I had a look on Magic (www.magic.gov.uk). The first one doesn't seem to be shown on the map but it looks like those beehive tunnel ventilation shafts. I can't see any rail lines near there, maybe it's something to do with reservoirs?

The second one is shown on the map near a reservoir and an aqueduct. No clue as to what it is though

I can see some faint ground markings running just beside that shaft, north to south. Maybe a buried hydro course ?
It might connect some reservoirs.

they're vent shafts. similar ones for Mugdock reservoir in dunbartonshire.

If there is a village near by then it could be a well that supplied it's water. A village local to me has had a similar sort of structure built on top of it but is slightly different because it was built in 1743. The door has now been blocked up and a post box added. See photo's

Just another possibillity...

If there are no rail tunnels nearby then I'd hazard a guess at it being a water aquaduct below. There may be others nearby in some sort of line. There is a huge system near to me - must get pics....

Indeed yes, its Penicuik house, I was there that same day I took the other photo's. It's undergoing some kind of restoration work as you'll see.....

It must have been a grand house when it was fully functional. I had a good scout around, there were lots of people out for walks and such like (Sunday Morning).
There's a good perimeter wall round the back and side, just at the top of the hill, and a large pond/resevoir at the bottom, where I believe there is also a boathouse. Must have been a wealthy family at some time...?

I believe there was a fire some time ago. People still live in the building to the north, may have been some kind of stables.

Yet again another place I need to go back and have a good rummage about at. It was too cold on the day to hang around, and my fiancee was giving me earache about being hungry!

I tried going to Penicuik house but couldn't find it as I was travelling without directions! Couldn't find it but drove past a derelict YMCA building in the town
