The Scottish Borders has suffered heavily from the import of cheap foreign goods- especially clothing. There are many examples of empty mills and factories and this one is another example.
Originally built c.1911 with a Modern Movement facade designed by Alexander Inglis, the nephew of a local joiner who was influenced by Robert Lorimer, the influential Scottish architect and designer.
There is a water tank atop the tower of the building believed to have been installed for the sprinkler system.
It was used as offices for a local finishing company.(Finishing is the process that turns the cloth into something more useable- either with printing or even teflon coating for example)
Again, a tightly sealed location to deter the local yoof.
