Thought I'd visit this as it was local to me. Opened in October 1963
and closed in September 1991 the post is at the end of a line of telegraph poles complete with junction box. The post was occupied at some time in the '80s by anti-nuclear protesters from Aberystwyth University, some 12 miles away (the Aberystwyth post had closed in 1968).
As reported in an earlier post by gridnutter, there's not a lot to see here but as I was able to get more detailed photos of the interior I thought I'd post them here for reference anyway.
The bunker is in good condition externally but the inside has been trashed: the chairs (except one) are smashed, as is the siren crate. The WB units are both missing and the BPI mount is lying on the table. (Compare with the Subbrit report made 9 years ago)
The compound
Surface features
The hatch was rather stiff and both of the locks were broken.
The remains of a siren crate and a folding chair were dumped in the toilet along with the original Elsan.
Inside the monitoring room.
Electrics
Fragments of paperwork
Old packaging
Looking back to the entrance shaft
Timer Switch
For those of you who are interested, I also drove past the site of the brick aircraft post mentioned in the report by Catford et al: It's now a pile of rubble.
Thanks for reading,
A.
