I had been badgered by a few people about returning to the Ship Canal Barges for some time, so finally I got some folks together comprising of Smurfinator, Drowned
_rat, Trash Kitty and a handful of others that Smurf bought along with her!
You will probably remember that I found these on google earth after hearing about them in a site and went to investigate alone. But I won’t go on about them again.
Yesterday I got a big surprise – there weren’t just the three prominent ones but a further TWO that had evaded me! One was on dry land after the waters had subsided some year’s back, but was still full. The other had full grown trees rising from the hold! Proof of just how long they had been there!
Just when we thought there was no more, we spotted some shapes by the mouth of the river. It was huge chunks of wood with small concrete pylons and ladder assemblies just left there!
The only down side to this explore was the amount of overgrowth surrounding the barges, it made it difficult to get a long shot and we got cut to ribbons in all the brambles. Still a good afternoon though!

On arrival!

nice find! would be good tro get the one with trees growing in it and float it down the thames or something

Great stuff that. I suppose there are only so many ways to design a barge but those look identical to the steel barges that used to bring the wood to the plywood factory in Lydney.

Brill find man! I think there is something a bit spooky about concrete barges. These ones are ace!

nice report mate, love the photo of the winch on the barge. Concrete is still used to patch holes in steel hulls as well.
