Open 1964 closed 1991. Post is in poor condition extenally bar the replaced hatch and the wooden hut adjacent has been torched. The interior... one can only say 'urban decay has set in' the interior shows signs of having been partially flooded at some time and all interior parts are in poor condition. The hatch has a spring mechanism instead of of the counterbalance one usually finds. some badly deteriorating paperwork inside

The new hatch is a torlift hatch which was installed in 1989 - they were fitted to posts that were constantly getting broken into or in areas close to large estates etc etc. They were more secure as they were no exterior hasps and locks to be attacked. You would have to use a special tool to remove a brass security plug, then you would use a pronged torlift key and twist it round untill the hatch opened- the handle looks like its missing on this one. It looks like the object welded in could actually be the key.

They were fitted to quite a few posts, and it was hoped that they would soon replace all the other hatches however before they could the corps was stood down.

Olney actually has a different reason for having the torlift hatch - the old one was blown up by a an anti nuclear protester!!

I was pleased to see this report. I almost visited earlier this month, it isn't too bad - better than some. Thanks for posting. Love the old Department for Works manhole grease!

thanks for the info about the hatch, weve not come across one of this type until now all our visits have been hatches with hasps,

No problem,

In some cases you may find that there are no hasps but they have fitted mortice locks to the underside of the hatch. This was an idea tryed before the torlift hatch (they have this at Great Ayton in Yorkshire) - however water was dripping through the keyholes into the post and rusting the locks lol

Weird, this one has been very well secured for the past few years.....maybe the Stihl Crew have been in the neighbourhood.
