I've noticed a few people using their knowledge and skills of abseiling and other rope work to get to some seriously cool locations. I know of at least 2 sites where it would be necessary to abseil, so my questions are:

- Does anyone know of a course or particular path to go down to get a standard of knowledge and experience to safely and confidently be able to abseil? Is there a certified course/courses that you'd recommend?
- What would the set-up cost be like for ropes and gear?

Even just a bit more knowledge of ropes and knots would be beneficial, so I could set up rope 'handrails' down slopes or safety lines, etc.

I mostly poop my pants when it comes to serious heights, but I'm getting better and am becoming increasingly intrigued by high up things! Seems like it would be a good way to knock my fear of heights on the head once and for all.

Cheers,

SJ.

You want a climbing club. This isn't really the place to give any more of a detailed answer than that, primarily because in this case a little knowledge is a dangerous thing... Your local climbing club will be able to give you full information.

Is a really good question tho.

I often wondered the same thing for so long. Harnesses and ropes are reletively cheap, and offer the only available route into some sites. I'd just never trust tying myself on!

As Krela said, there is no 'official recognised qualification, or 'certificate' - Climbing clubs are king.

You want to talk to our resident rope guru GPS Jim, what he doen't know about tying on / throwing yourself off a derelict building isn't worth knowing. Maybe he should run a course... ;)

Ha ha!! Excellent question!! I would love to do courses :) If you're anywhere near Yorkshire if be happy to show you the ropes - so to speak. It's really cheap to get into, the biggest cost is your time in learning. I've done climbing/abseiling courses and they've been my guide. Let me know if I can help [email protected]

Funnily enough, I've started a website. www.tiedto111.com a website about abseiling from 111 different UE locations and showing the world that UE is not criminal and is also enjoyable.

Ok mate, will do! I'm not going to chuck myself off of the seafront promenade with a bit of 550 paracord tied to my waist and try to sue the forum members either, so don't worry  I did try and climb down the stairs with a piece of tow rope once when I was 5 though :p

Aye, so many things to give you an Urbex edge! I've been looking at drones too, but a lack of cash and a penchant for buying old junk has left me out of pocket for that sort of stuff

Haha can't say I'd be so keen tying myself on either! I suppose it's all down to practice within a supervised environment though.
