Hello

What are the biggest threats/risks when visiting abandoned but otherwise structurally safe building?

Have people ever encountered any hostile squatters or crackheads?

Broken Asbestos, The stuff seems to in most buildings, Hypodermic Needles from drug use, Glass, Nails, Pigeon poo as well. Simple precautions remove most hazards along with common sense. Surprisingly ive never meet any one hostile apart from the occasional security guard :D

If you look along the right hand side of the homepage here there's a bunch of safety information links.

In addition to what Sparky and Krela said heights are probably what I have the most respect for while out and about.

To be honest I've met plenty of friendly people but never anyone outright set to cause me any harm, your more likely to get in a fight on a night out drinking. Try to get someone else to come with you if its a particular concern. Some people say keep a packet of cigarettes on your person to offer to someone, should you need to diffuse a situation.

Holes in floors, unsafe walls especially if you're climbing. Sometimes there are live electrics, which combined with metal thievery can obviously be lethal. Lead paint, Asbestos, possibly radiation although this is pretty unlikely with UK regulations. Chemicals, stagnant water, bad air in confined places, Weils disease, Tetanus. The list is long but as SparkyHID says, caution and common sense remove a lot of the risk.

I always wondered about the crack heads/squatters/hobos when I was starting out. I've seen plenty of evidence of them...even stepped in some stinky evidence, if you catch my drift, but I've never actually bumped into them. They're very shy creatures indeed and probably 9 times out of 10 don't pose a threat.

Honestly the most common safety issue with me, being a gammy legged giraffe, is slipping. I've slipped on poop, oil, wet patches, rubble, algae, mud, etc more times than I can remember and just narrowly avoided injury. The major dangerous thing is heights - losing your footing, falling through a rotten floor, tripping down stairs, etc. For that reason, I don't do high stuff and I don't do sketchy entries/exits. I've also had 1 live electricity mains on a wet floor, a few hypodermic needles and seen my share of disturbed asbestos.

To completely echo what everyone above has said...

There are 17,000 members on this site, with hundreds actively exploring every weekend. I can count the number of "Bad people encounters" on one hand with plenty of fingers to spare. Even then its unlikely to be a life or death situation.

Falling through floors has to be absolute #1. I'm extremely light footed for a man of my girth (ahem....) and I've been through a few, and seen a lot of mates go through more.

Its a natural instinct to worry about people, but it's really unfounded. Fallling through / off something is easily the most dangerous thing in our pass time.
