I have made a few visits to sevs (wished I had made more). But never seen the admin block before so me and man gone wrong made the trip to it on a nice summers morning. The main thing to see here is the nice staircase and skylight. It had been stripped and looked like work had started to restore it at some point. I think it might be finished now. But was nice to see this last little bit. The original hospital was built in 1913 as the second county asylum in Essex. The hospital was built with the standard corridor layout, and makes and female areas, villas were built around the main complex. The hospital was transferred to the NHS in 1948. The site finally closed in 1997 after the introduction of care in the community in the eighties. The site was sold for housing. Most of it is demolished now and a sprawling housing estate.
