An East End look about with Big C and Little Oz, which can only be described as a very very close shave.
Such beautiful buildings and a very interesting past.
One can only imagine what it was like, when it first started out as a workhouse !
History
The buildings were originally built in 1848-49 as a workhouse, for the Board of Guardians of the City of London Union.
It became an infirmary for the CLU in 1874, and in 1912 the Bow Institution for the long-term sick.
In 1936 it became a psychiatric unit, under the St Clement's name again.
During WW2, when it had 397 beds, the Hospital was badly damaged by bombs in 1944.
In 1948 it joined the NHS and the bomb damage was repaired.
By 1959 the Hospital had become exclusively psychiatric. It became part of the London Hospital in 1968 and went through
various organisational changes until closure in 2005. Services were transferred to a new Adult Mental Health Facility at
Mile End Hospital in October 2005.
The site is now owned by the Homes & Communities Agency, who in 2009 intended to create 275 new dwellings on the site.
Local campaigners advocated that it should instead become the site of the UK's first urban Community Land Trust.
In August 2013 St Clement's was reopened to the public for the first time as the site of Shuffle Festival,
a community festival showing films curated by Danny Boyle. There was also an art exhibition, music, live projections and a 'Day of the Mind' -
an alternative fête day with installations by artists and scientists exploring ideas about mental health.
