St. Peter's Church was last used as an active place of worship in the 1980s, but nowadays the defunct church is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and remains consecrated. However it is only used once or twice a year for the very occasional concert, it's location in a field in the middle of nowhere down gated farm tracks obviously doesn't do a great deal of good for vehicular access.
It took a fair bit of tracking down this one, but I'm glad I found it as it's a beautiful place. There has been a church here for a thousand years and this particular building dates all the way back to medieval times. It is the sole remaining building from a long-lost medieval village buried to the north of the church, inside some of the fittings date from the 14th century right up until the Victorian era, the pews are rough and handmade out of ancient timbers but are mixed in with modern plastic chairs. There is a mausoleum containing the remains of one of the families who feature heavily on the gravestones inside the church, this was fenced off with very big nasty spikes in the 1960s after the church was brought back from a derelict ruin.
Me and my friend tracked it down and entered quickly to escape the rain, inside was incredibly peaceful with not a sound to be heard from outside, it's remoteness allowing for a real escape.
Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
Thanks for looking
