The Union Mill was built about 175 years ago and employed about 300 people. It had a checkered career in its alternating production of flax and jute. During World War One it was used as barracks.
It lay empty for spells and was finally bought by James Deuchar Ltd, Lochside Brewery, Montrose, and was used as a maltings. This was carried on by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries until they built new central modern maltings elsewhere.
Site was developed to private housing.
Excuse the quality of the photos but they are now 26 years old and were taken on a kodac 110 compact camera
This must have been my first attempt at UE :)

Only part of site left that is untouched was the perimeter walls the rest was demolished and a new street put on to site.

There was another building in Montrose that I used to drive passed everyday going to work. I think it was an old distillery or something on the main road. It was all boarded up for ages but then got changed into flats.

Terrifyingly grim is that building. Very nice, and also, I want a 25 year old Kodak compact! The graininess and washed out colours on the photos look ace, really suit the subject.

Cheers for that – I think I can just about remember it before the site was cleared.

Yeah, that was the Lochside Distillery – it sat empty for about ten years, then burned down three years ago and flats were built on the site. Happily, I've got a batch of photos I took early one morning when I found a way inside. :)

I think I put some onto my Flickr a while ago …
