Hello,
Only my third post and also not the best due to the amount of boarding up that has gone on since I was last there.
Being half Polish, I travel to Warsaw a few times a year to visit relatives and friends. I saw this last Summer but have no opportunity to have a look other than from over a fence. This time I made sure I went to have a look but the hammers and nails have been at work boarding up smashed windows.
The building you see was Warszawa Głowna, translates to Warsaw Main. It was built on sidings after WWII. The previous station was totally destroyed in another part of the city by the Nazi's after the failed Warsaw Uprising. The station was little used after a newer bigger terminus was built in the mid 70's known as Warszawa Centralna - Warsaw Central. After 1979, few trains used Warsaw Main and by 1997 the station was closed.
Part of the building was converted into the already very dated Polish State Railways (PKP) Museum which houses a number of steam and electric locomotives alongside a couple of disused platforms. The remaining tracks are overgrown.
One corner of the station is used by the Polish Postal Service for storage.
When I arrived there were two postal employees whizzing around on fork lifts. I asked one of them could I go onto the station and take pictures, he didn't seem to keen but said the it was up to me and that security regulary patrol the old station.
I pressed on and took as many as I could before I saw a guard in the distance and walked into the rear of the museum (no fence) and took a few of the old locomotives.
Enjoy.
The station now
As it was in the late 60s, early 70's
Old toilets
Not too sure what this was, although there were a number of old offices along a platform
Platforms
Looking out from the buffer stops
Towards the buffers (note the old postal vehicles also no longer used)
