This is my first post so hope I've done it OK!

This is a report on the crypt under the Church at Wentworth, South Yorkshire. It's under the old church, not the new one. It's only open on special open days and is pretty interesting.

View of the graveyard:

This is the outside of the church - much erosion:

Entrance to the tunnel:

The tunnel - very smooth - gives the impression of concrete:

In this alcove you can see the marks which the oil lamps have made:

Spaces for coffins:

Same photo but with flash. Again, this is stone but gives the impression of modern concrete construction. Note the brick rear walls:

For some reason I didn't take a photo of the 'used' positions, ie. the ones with coffins behind them. Each one has a squareengraved grave stone sealing the chamber. Apparently they are so well sealed that they are air and moisture tight. One of the coffins is a lead lined one.

Like I said for some reason I didn't take a photo of the slabs covering the 'used' positions :(. You don't see the coffins as they are behind the slabs. Hopefully I will be able to get another visit and fill in the missing photo's at some point!
From what I remember there were about 6 or 7 actually filled. Alao the doors at the end of the tunnel were iron but made to look like wood.
Another interesting point was that there were air ducts built in when it was made and so the place wasn't that damp or fusty.

Very interesting - I really like that gateway - thanks :)

Cheers Dystopia. You might know the answer to something that puzzled me. In the graveyard there's a grave stone (laid down) which has part of the name removed. It's removed in a very precise rectangle about an inch deep. I can't remember whether its the first or second name - I'll dig the photo out. Any thoughts??
