Where to start! Obviously I won't bore you with history as it is all over this forum. We arrived here a bit late from London after having a nightmare on the trains, so we knew we had a bit of a flying visit due to the lack of daylight - although the clocks going forward helped us out! Managed to see a lot, including the tower and the padded cell. On the way out it got dark very fast, and the walkways and buildings can be very disorienting, especially when there are sagging/nonexistent floors all over the place. We were trying to get into the building we got in through, but we were in the one next to it, so coming back into the covered walkway a security guard who spoke very broken English and carried a large plank of wood caught us. We were walked to the nearest exit and waited with him and his partner until the police arrived. Won't go into that, but we got a lift to Epsom station! So not too bad. This is not a good place to be in the dark, mainly because you need to see where you are going, but also because security tend to be a lot more suspicious, and your torchlight gives you away!

Nice one fella..I understand its quite busy with demo going on..is the remains of the hall still there?

Well, that's changed a bit, though I'm actually more surprised by what's still there than what's not.

Ah yes, that'd be the famed 'MC Hammer'. He's an allright chap if you get on his good side - last time I got caught, I apologised for the trouble and he let me walk away (watching to make sure I didn't duck back through the fence of course). Guess they're stepping things up now there are builders on site.

Also, small, possibly pedantic point - West Park was never an 'Asylum' per se - it appeared on the scene too late for that title (1921) and was known as West Park Mental Hospital from the start. Good report and pics though.

No it wasn't MC Hammer, this guy was Nepalese, (I assume) as the police officer who gave us a lift to the station informed is the two who caught us were ex-Gurkhas. Very scary in the dark in those walkways, he came round a corner and we thought he was going to hit us

Sounds like the explore didn't go quite as planned but you have got some cracking shots there!

Thanks for sharing :)

No not really to plan, but still happy to have seen some of it. In the end I was relieved to have been caught by security, as we were shown the way out! Not a place to go in the dark (for me at least :()
