Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but its not owned by any of the heritage people and its definately rural.

Whorlton Castle was stayed at by Edward 2nd in the 1320's whilst hunting and was held by royalists during Cromwells time in charge. In 2005 there were plans by the owners to convert it back into a residence.
It now consists of the gatehouse, and behind that the cellars of an earlier castle.

A notch beside the gate - possibly to put a bar across to lock the gate?

The walls are eroding well now

The cellars of the older castle look like they are in almost constant use - lots of cans and it smelt of wee

Another excellent find. Love the pictures. I can see a grill in the base of one of the towers (at least I think it's a tower lol). I wonder if English Heritage own it instead of the National Trust? As an old hall not too far away from me, Sutton Scarsdale Hall, is in a similar condition, and is owned by English Heritage. Just wondered.

Excellent pics,

:) Sal

ps, just found these snippets on the castle.

You just need to know how to get into the uper part of castle. There is a flight of stairs in the wall from the first floor to the second then you can climb on to the walls up to the highst point which i did only it was a bit windy and a long way down so didn't stay out in the open to long.
