This is an old tunnel from a main line by where I live. It was closed with the usual cut backs from Dr Beeching's era. It sits under a big bypass roundabout, and no one really knows its there thousands of vehicles pass over it every day, and it’s just sat there.

When I was a kid you could walk up the line, until in the mid 90’s they built the bypass on the line.

It’s not very big but something I like and very nice place just to sit and contemplate life.

I don’t quite understand why a temporary fence has been built of scaffold poles; it’s in one photo above. It’s not as if it would keep anyone out but I put it down as one of life’s little mysteries.

Cool pis Sheep,

Is there anything dangerous about the railway line that people cant walk up. it seems unusual, as you say that fence won't keep anyone out. Its amazing to think with all the overgrown forestry that trains used batter up and down there. Excellent find.

Sometimes farmers put up makeshift barriers like that to stop sheep from getting into somewhere where they can break their legs (on the old trackways, for instance)...you can see where I'm going with this, can't you!...:D :D :D

Yeah, that would make sense but the tunnel is blocked by two housing estates either side with big fences so it still puzzles me.

Yeah I get the idea.....lol.

But I agree someone should have strung up Dr B, after all the chaos he caused.

S

Regards Dr B, you do have to remember that a lot of these lines he closed were seriously in the red financially.

I wish they hadn't closed the Buxton-Matock line.

Yeah thats true, he closed the Ebbw vale to Cardiff line and have now spent millions to re open it. But because of roads thgey have built they have to re route the railway line which is going to miss Newport out, which is causing so much problems this way.
