The Midland and great Northern Joint Railway was a once proud Cross Country Railway that spanned the width of Norfolk across the fens from Kings Lynn to the Midlands. It was designed to bring holidaymakers to the East Coast Resorts, one of them being the town of Cromer on the North Norfolk Coast. To open up the coast even more two more lines were built under a commitee called the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint Commitee formed in 1899, to build a line from Gt Yarmouth in Norfolk to Lowestoft in Suffolk, hence the name above. There was also another line built from North Walsham a market town in North Norfolk, to Cromer which interesected with the Great Eastern, Norwich to Cromer line just outside the town. There two Mighty viaducts were built to take the G.E Line on to Sheringham 5 miles north of Cromer and give the N and S Joint Railway access to Cromer Beach Station. So one Viaduct is live the other bit the dust in 1952. It is a masterpiece of design being built on a skew 180 degrees but also a 1 in 82 Gradient. Anyway the Pics......

The Viaduct carrying the N and S Joint was built in about 1899 I think the G.Eastern one thats still live I am told is quite a bit earlier. I do love them to bits but not being the best with heights decided not to go for a clamber up the disused one although access was possible, and there were a lot of Bungalows around the Viaducts as well. A return visit is not out of the question though!!;)

Very nice pictures. Is this viaduct not fare away from the former Honing station ?

Those are great, Shucky. Love the skew on the first one amd the engineer blue bricks are always a joy to see. :)
Thanks Foxy. The skew one is the disused one, and it rally is a masterpiece. Not as big as your Cannington though.

These are near enough the only Viaducts I know of in Norfolk apart from a monster one thats live just south of Norwich and part of the London Mainline. Its a bit flat round here you see!:)

Yes access was possible James but there were a lot of Houses and people about because it was halfway through the day! An early morning visit will be best methinks!:)
