Fort Augustus Abbey

Dark sandstone-built monastery on the shores of Loch Ness converted by monks from a 1742 fort, bought from Lord Lovat who used it as a shooting lodge. It comprises a 1970s concrete built school with jail(!) inside, one huge and magnificent chapel and several small chapels inside. Interesting features include a clock and bell towers. Currently under restoration although there are areas of the abbey which are still unmolested.

Finally got into the belltower and gave the bell a good ring on Christmas Day.

I think I remember seeing this when I was canoeing the Caledonian canal,from Fort William to Inverness in 04. What I saw of it looked great,if in fact what I saw was this monastry!

Indeed! You can live in it too in a few years, if you have a spare £150,000 or so. You should have popped into the abbey boathouse.

No hot clocktower action unfortunately though, and my fat arse wasn't getting completely through that belltower hatch.

Hopefully the abbey will still be unmolested when you re-visit it, and free of workers/jobsworths.
