Visited this one with BigLoada.

After being a bit p'd off with the nearby ROC we turned to plan B.

Kielder Viaduct is something special. Anyone visiting the area should take the time to see this magnificent relic from the industrial revolution.

The viaduct was preserved in 1969 by The Northumberland and Newcastle society. Built in 1862 to carry the North Tyne Railway it is a rare and one of the finest examples of skew arch form construction. This method of bridge construction was pioneered by geometrician Peter Nicholson of Newcastle Upon Tyne.

If you ever visit Kielder the first thing that strikes you is the trees. Trees need water to grow and at Kielder they have too much!! Not normally a problem as such but the "grey weather" played havoc with our images.
As a result of this I am very limited in any decent ones to post up.

Some arch shots. Repairs can be seen where bricks were used instead of stone.

The track bed. It looks as if two tracks lay here at one point. Spot BigLoada?

The walls at the top of the bridge are castelated. I think this was done to mimic nearby Kielder castle. The old fencing or railings were removed for safety reasons. Recently some artwork has been installed by The
Blacksmiths of Great Britain. This work is outstanding. I can see that several different styles are present. I will only show one.

It is a real shame about the rest of my images not looking too good. I know BigLoada had problems too.

Thanks for looking. :)

Aye the weather was so anti-camera it was unreal. I know BigLoada's pics more or less failed too.

The smithy work was a bonus for me. Each frame had a theme. The viaduct is massive and the angles are mind boggling too. I'm really pleased it was saved. :)

We did this location because we needed a breather from below ground but seeing as the days are so short and the light so bad I think we should head back under. Morloks comes to mind!

I have one more above ground site to do and then it's below stuff after that.

Very interesting, I`ve not been to Kielder yet, will have to pay a visit next time we visit the in-laws. Excellent picture of the blacksmiths artwork

Brilliant that iron work i bet you almost felt tempted to try and pick one of those blackberries they look so real.

Aye , its impressive they way the skew arches are built. Must have been some clever mathematics involved in calculating the angles!

Most of my photos from the day failed, heres two I kept of the brilliant iron work. Sausage was very excited, him being a man of the molten malleable metal himself:

Each berry is the size of my fist! The leaves were about a foot across. I would love some gates with work like that on. :)

BigLoada: I think the artwork has done something to me! I can't help but think of it. Gotta make a forge and try this stuff out.

I absolutely love that place, I can't count the amount of times I've been to Kielder

Did you guys go check out the spill way at hawkhope car park / wc ? I have some strange attraction to that place and I love the valve tower out in the water, sadly never been in it though. I once asked a n/water guy about a tour but he said that they don't do it anymore due to the threat of terrorism?

I once climbed down into the spillway on a world cup night some barmy summers evening years ago. :)

I'll have to dig out some pics and start a thread lol

The drive over there is nice as well and there are a couple of good spots on the way. Not all strictly urbex but still noteworthy nonetheless.

some sort of castle type thing that I never havn't figured out yet.

'Roughside' bothie. I once spent one of the coldest nights of my life here.

There's loads more and also the unmissable forest drive which I delight on locking the diffs for

Crikey mate you go off the beaten track! I think the forrest hides a stack of stuff - not to mention the reservoir. I've only just discovered that Plashets Colliery is under it...

Kielder is a bit off the beaten track for us generally though I do go with the family for a drive and lunch now and then. :)

We do need to meet up at some point though - you could show us the sights! (via 4X4!)

Not a problem mate I like to think I'm an excellent tour guide of kielder forest ! :)

I agree that a 4x4 is the best way to see it all, pleanty to do around there and a few sites that I've spotted but never visited. Deffo worth a meet and an explore !

Next time you're thinking about heading up that way just give me a shout and I'll see what I can do !

Love the blacksmiths art work. It's good you got some pics of it, pity you had problems getting more of the viaduct itself. Nice one though.

I've tried chucking stuff through photieshop and it looks mad. A bit like a nightmare.
Saying that though, I'm hopeless at adjusting pics!!
Our cameras just didn't like the lighting that day.

Sounds like you need Adobe Lightroom 2, its so much easier than photoshop.
