Pillboxes Barrow-in-Furness docks - May 08

The title says it all. :lol:

LAA mount still in postion

And finally a gun mount behind the last pillbox

By my counting there are about 33 pillboxes still extant around Barrow, could this be a record ?

Hey Shatters, digging the pics mate. Ah Type 23 pillboxes (one with the AA position), we don't get those in my neck of the woods unfortunately.

Now this bad boy is certainly rather wacky, what the hell is with the red brick part on the roof?

Odd, is the red brick section actually connected with the pillbox beneath it?

Its not connected, I think its a fire watchers shelter, looking across at the shipyard.

Pillboxs..........

I know they are pretty small fry compared to some of the WW2 stuff around the country and across Europe but I really love pillboxs..........
We all know nowadays that the Germans weren't really close to ever mounting an invasion but when these were built in the very dark and frightening days of 1939 and 1940 most of the nation was truly shitting themselves at the prospect of Fritz marching up their local high street.....Just imagine being in the local Home Guard and being on duty in one of these night after night........a bit lonely......... probably freezing cold..........looking out at the dark sea and wondering .......are they coming tonight? ................ :neutral:

I drove up there back in January 2007 to do it. It was the worst weather I'd ever encountered and despite its size and in the dock, it was being thrown all over the place!
